Hospitals to “cure” energy price hikes by implementing energy efficiency measures

Close to 70 hospitals are set to receive a share of a £50m funding pot designed to support the implementation of a variety of energy efficiency measures that would cut the NHS’s £600m annual energy bill and drive down carbon emissions, a media news report has revealed.

These hospital energy efficiency initiatives are meant to help trusts save up to £14m a year, with the NHS being able to spend the additional funds on patients’ care. In fact, the Department of Health said that the expected savings could pay for 18,500 cataract operations or 2,300 hip replacements, just to give a few examples.

Health minister Dr Dan Poulter said that the money saved will be “reinvested directly” in front-line patient care.

“Our NHS is one of the largest users of energy in the country. And just like the rest of us, hospitals should be doing everything they can to reduce the amount they spend,” he added.

“These schemes demonstrate the easy ways our NHS can make improvements to help power hospitals more efficiently, save on energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions.”
