£3billion bill for Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme to be passed down to consumers, British Gas warns
The £3billion bill for the government Energy Company Obligation (ECO) programme is likely to be passed down to consumers, thus further increasing their overall energy bills, British Gas has warned.
Under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, energy suppliers have to offer home insulation for free in poorer areas. However, the overall bill for all the UK energy suppliers amounts to a total of 3 billion pounds, which is way too much for suppliers to take in.
According to a news report on the matter, British Gas alone, which supplies 12million homes across the country, faces a £1.4billion bill by 2015 for complying with the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. ‘I don’t think any company can absorb these costs,’ said Sam Laidlaw, boss of British Gas-owner Centrica. ‘Ultimately these are costs that have to be passed through and that’s the position that any energy supplier would be in’ he added.
The prospects of paying even more than they already are on their energy bills will certainly get quite a lot of people worried, and even more should become interested in implementing a variety of energy-saving measures within their homes.
